Statistics and Data

ENTSO-E produces several statistical reports, which provide timely and consistent data on power systems of member TSOs:

Monthly Statistics – This report is produces monthly and provides basic figures on power systems of member TSOs – including production, consumption and cross-border exchanges.

Electricity in Europe – This report provides early analysis in text and graphics of the major provisional electricity transmission statistics and trends from the previous year, in advance of the definitive Yearly Statistics & Adequacy Retrospect report.

Yearly Statistics and Adequacy Retrospect (YS & AR) - This report provides a wide range of yearly figures on member transmission system operators’ power systems – including production, consumption, cross-border exchanges and network components.

Monthly Statistics Reports

ENTSO-E’s Monthly Statistics provide basic figures on power systems of member TSOs, including production, consumption and cross-border exchanges.

The Monthly Statistics reports are the basis for the Yearly Statistics & Adequacy Retrospect Report. The reports feature monthly data concerning the following points:

  • Electricity supply situation per country
  • Electricity supply representation per country
  • Physical energy flows
  • Overview of the detailed physical energy flows
  • Load flows (night & day)
  • Unavailability of international tie lines (major events)
  • Network reliability (major events)
  • Highest and lowest load on the 3rd Wednesday
  • Load diagrams on the 3rd Wednesday
  • Water reservoir Nordic

Electricity in Europe

Electricity in Europe provides a brief analysis in text and graphics of the major provisional electricity transmission statistics and trends from the previous year.

As part of the set of Statistical publications, Electricity in Europe delivers an early overview of the annual statistics, well in advance of the definitive Yearly Statistics & Adequacy Retrospect report, to meet demand for earlier information.

The three main categories covered are: Electricity consumption, generation and cross-border exchanges across the ENTSO-E system.

Yearly Statistics & Adequacy Retrospect

The YS&AR report has been replaced first by the MAF in 2016, then by the ERAA in 2021. The ERAA is a pan-European monitoring assessment of power system resource adequacy of up to 10 years ahead. Building on the work done with the Mid-term Adequacy Forecast (MAF), the ERAA is a leap forward in system modelling. It is based upon state-of-the-art methodologies and probabilistic assessments, aiming to model and analyse possible events which can adversely impact the balance between supply and demand of electric power. It will be an important element for supporting qualified decisions by policy makers on strategic matters such as the introduction of capacity mechanisms (CMs).

View ERAA

The YS&AR is issued once the data is definitive and complements two other ENTSO-E statistical publications, Electricity in Europe and the Statistical Factsheet, which are based on provisional data.

The YS&AR is published together with all the background data used in separate spreadsheets making it a very useful tool for stakeholders. It comes in addition to ENTSO-E’s data portal which makes already a lot of information available for the public and interested parties.

The first edition of the YS&AR was published in 2013 covering the year 2012. It combined and replaced two former ENTSO-E reports, the Statistical Yearbook and the System Adequacy Retrospect.

The third edition was released on 5 February 2016.

Previous Editions

As and from 2012, the System Adequacy Retrospect has been merged with the Statistical Yearbook, to become the Yearly Statistics & Adequacy Retrospect (YS&AR).

Statistical Yearbooks

The ENTSO-E Statistical Yearbook provides a wide range of the previous years’ figures on power systems of member TSOs, including production, consumption, cross-border exchanges and network components. The Yearbook also aggregates data from the monthly statistical reports. The first Yearbook with data encompassing all of ENTSO-E’s members for certain data sets was published in 2009. All previous Yearbooks encompass only data sets of the Continental European synchronous area (former UCTE).

The last edition of the Statistical Yearbook (2011) was published in 2012.

Since 2013, both the Statistical Yearbook and the System Adequacy Retrospect were merged and replaced by a new report, the Yearly Statistics & Adequacy Retrospect.

The ENTSO-E Statistical Factsheet is now available on the Power Statistics page.

ENTSO-E On-Line Application Portal for Network Datasets

The datasets represent the power systems of the ENTSO-E members for future state of the power system, used for long term planning. The available datasets would assist research and innovation projects in the energy sector in Europe by providing a realistic representation of the European power system; allowing users to validate innovative methods and tools for power system analyses.

The datasets become quickly very rich and complex to handle, although expectations are very different, requiring quite simple ore more advanced modelling. The datasets must also comply with legal provisions, regarding grid safety, data publication limitations in all countries and confidentiality of third party (connected customers) involved data. In order to meet users’ expectations and legal requirements, ENTSO-E proposes a step-by-step approach to progressively make more data available while preserving key confidentiality requirements and data quality.

In the process to improve the quality and usability of ENTSO-E datasets, the data will be published in CGMES format with reference documentation regarding the dataset content and capabilities. Each file corresponds to a TSO in CGMES format.

The interconnection data is contained in the boundary file.

For Continental Europe, there are 25 files in CGMES format plus a boundary file. For Baltic Region there is one CGMES file plus a boundary file. While the transparency platform or TYNDP market studies data are downloadable, grid datasets are available to institutions (universities, registered associations, companies, etc.) either as standard material upon simple request; or for more advanced data, upon request, with a specific description and signature of a Non-Disclosure-Agreement.

In this framework, ENTSO-E makes the following datasets available:
