Brussels, 22 October 2026 – Europe’s electricity system is at the heart of the defining challenges of our time: strengthening energy security, boosting competitiveness, keeping energy affordable, and delivering on our decarbonisation ambitions.

Today, ENTSO-E launches its new Strategy, setting a clear direction for how Europe’s Transmission System Operators will work together to shape a power system that is secure, competitive, affordable and decarbonised.

Europe’s power system is undergoing a profound transformation driven by decarbonisation, electrification, and the need to strengthen energy security and competitiveness. Growing demand and emerging challenges, from extreme weather to cyber and physical security risks, require coordinated action across Europe.

ENTSO-E President, Zbynek Boldis said:  “A secure, resilient and interconnected electricity system, underpinned by strong cooperation across borders, is more important than ever.”

ENTSO-E Chair of the Board, Damian Cortinas continued: “The new ENTSO-E Strategy provides a common direction for Europe’s TSOs and focuses their common framework on the areas where European coordination can deliver the greatest value for our economy and society. It is built around three overarching objectives: Security, Competitiveness & Affordability, and Decarbonisation.”

To deliver these objectives, ENTSO-E has identified five strategic priority work areas: initiatives to ensure system security, including security of supply, physical security, and cybersecurity; grid development and grid connections; adequacy and flexibility; operation of the future power system; and market integration and market transparency.

Europe’s interconnected electricity system already confirms the value of cross-border cooperation. “Since the first Ten-Year Network Development Plan (TYNDP) was published in 2010, 25 EU Member States have established at least one more interconnection with a neighbouring country,” states Sonya Twohig, ENTSO-E Secretary-General.

Building on this foundation, the Strategy will guide ENTSO-E and its member TSOs in addressing the opportunities and challenges of Europe’s evolving electricity system.
