The Continental European TSOs are pleased to announce that Ukrenergo, the Ukrainian TSO, has achieved compliance with the key technical requirements necessary to enable a permanent interconnection between the power systems of Continental Europe and Ukraine.

The Synchronisation project with Ukrenergo began in 2017, with the signing of the Agreement on Conditions for the Future Interconnection of the power system of Ukraine with the power system of Continental Europe. Today’s announcement signals the full implementation of the conditions included in this Agreement.

On 16 March 2022, an emergency synchronisation was achieved as a signal of solidarity between the Continental European TSOs and Ukrenergo. Since then, Ukrenergo has made extraordinary efforts, under difficult wartime conditions, to achieve full compliance with the operational rules.

The Continental European TSOs have also decided to increase the capacity limit for electricity trade from Continental Europe to Ukraine and Moldova to 1,700 megawatts, based on system security and stability simulations, reflecting an increase of 500 MW from the previous limit.

Mr Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, CEO of Ukrenergo, noted:

We greatly appreciate today’s decision and I’m sure that this achievement will help to significantly increase the flexibility and reliability of our grid operation and create conditions for expanding cooperation. This is the result of many years of persistent work, which has been particularly challenging since the outbreak of full-scale war. We are grateful to ENTSO-E for its continued support and trust throughout this process.

ENTSO-E President Zbyněk Boldiš said:

ENTSO-E welcomes the new level of cooperation between the Continental European TSOs and Ukrenergo. This development not only enhances regional energy security, but also promotes a more integrated and efficient energy market. It also underlines our ongoing efforts to ensure a resilient and integrated electricity network and to foster cooperation among European TSOs.
