ENTSO-E highlights the increasing operational relevance of services delivered under the EU Space Programme for the secure and resilient operation of Europe’s interconnected electricity transmission system.
In recognition of this operational need, ENTSO-E responded to the European Commission’s proposal for an EU Space Act. In its response, ENTSO-E underlined the need for electricity Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to be recognised as critical users of EU Space Programme services. By anchoring EU space policy in the operational realities of power system operation, ENTSO-E seeks to strengthen the resilience, security and coherence of the European electricity system, while contributing to the Union’s strategic autonomy in both energy and space.
This evolution is grounded in three complementary pillars of the EU Space Programme. Copernicus enhances situational awareness through operational Earth observation data, while Galileo delivers secure and precise positioning, navigation and timing essential for digitalised and time-critical grid functions. In addition, secure satellite communications, including GOVSATCOM and the future IRIS², ensure resilient coordination and continuity of service when terrestrial networks are disrupted.
ENTSO-E will continue committed to foster disciplined and constructive engagement between Transmission System Operators, European institutions and EU space programme authorities, so that space-enabled services evolve in step with the needs of Europe’s electricity transmission system.
