“ENTSO-E’s role for European system and market integration is set to increase - as is the role of ACER. This must go along with constantly improving performance and transparency. And it requires vision. We share ours today, and will deepen it with four policy papers ‘from promise to practice’ in the next months. Transmission is where all actors in the electricity market meet: consumers, suppliers, aggregators, distributors, generators, traders. This is a unique position – with high responsibilities”, says Peder Andreasen, Energinet.dk, new ENTSO-E President, as he is to preside over the launch of ENTSO-E’s vision package this evening. “ENTSO-E and its members are highly committed to help make the Energy Union real. European citizens have a lot to benefit from strong EU integration in the field of electricity”.

Peder Andreasen and Bente Hagem, Statnett, new ENTSO-E Chair, will hand over their vision package for the Energy Union to Juraj Nociar, Chief of Cabinet of the European Commission Vice-President, Maroš Šefčovič, and to Dzintars Kauliņš and Frédéric Thoma, representing respectively the outgoing Latvian Presidency and the incoming Luxembourg Presidency.
“Around 30% of electricity in Europe is produced from renewables. In 15 years, this will go up to about 50%”, adds Bente Hagem. “A paradigm shift is well underway in electricity!”
Renewables integration and EU market integration are at the heart of ENTSO-E’s vision package built around four blocks: energy regions, smarter regulation, market design and security of supply. “Getting 41 TSOs from 34 different countries to agree on and implement common solutions is not always easy. Regions can be stepping stones for innovation and implementation”, Peder Andreasen explains. “But the internal energy market remains the objective. All regions have to be on board. EU neighbours should not be forgotten “.
Bente Hagem insists on the constant evolution of ENTSO-E. “We will always strive to improve our work products”. Stakeholder feedback is for us not only a legal obligation. It is our barometer. Together with ACER, the Commission, the Council and the Parliament, it show us if we are heading in the right direction.” The new chair of ENTSO-E Board highlighted progress made so far. “We have common rules and network codes for one of the largest electricity markets in the world serving over 500 million consumers.” Bente Hagem also mentions price coupling, common network planning and regional security centres. “In all this we worked closely with partners. None of us can claim to achieve the Energy Union on its own. It is teamwork we need”.
For Peder Andreasen “putting the citizen at the heart of the power system is not only genuinely legitimate. It also has huge potential”. Konstantin Staschus, ENTSO-E Secretary-General, goes on saying that “with the right price signals, proper data handling and interface between distribution and transmission, and demand side response in all markets, the electricity paradigm shift will speed up. Cost increases can be limited and all will benefit.”
Peder Andreasen and Bente Hagem thank their predecessors Nick Winser, National Grid, and Pierre Bornard, RTE. “We are very grateful to them having brought ENTSO-E so far! We will act European to fight climate change, support sustainability and affordability, keep our electricity supply secure and increase transparency”, concludes Bente Hagem.
