In their joint position paper “Power to Gas - A Sector Coupling Perspective”, ENTSO-E and ENTSOG, the European associations of transmission system operators respectively for electricity and gas, call for scaling up the power conversion technologies to further explore its potential. The paper will be published before the Madrid Forum, the annual European forum on gas. Both associations stress that Power to Gas as conversion technology may have the potential to reduce the cost of further decarbonisation of the energy system.

“Integrating the electricity and gas sectors through Power to Gas technology will result in a more resilient and safe hybrid energy system and a more efficient integration of renewables’’ commented Jan Ingwersen, ENTSOG General Manager.

“Climate change is one of the key issues that needs to be addressed. We must act now. Infrastructure for renewable electricity and renewable and decarbonised gases are crucial to fight climate change. These technologies can complement each other and should be pushed forward now”, adds Laurent Schmitt, ENTSO-E Secretary General.

With this position paper, the ENTSOs commit to continue cooperating to study the impact of power to gas, integrating this in the electricity and gas grid planning, as well as involving stakeholders
